Zero-Flux Chains in Metrology: From Reference Current to Acquisition

Metrology is about a comparison that can be reproduced. A zero-flux sensor is one link in that chain and must be evaluated together with the reference source, load and acquisition equipment.

The reference chain

The reference current source, reference sensor and device under test form the comparison chain. Supply, load and cable conditions should be consistent; otherwise a difference may come from the chain rather than the device under test.

Splitting the error

Separate sensor offset and gain, output conversion, acquisition quantization and timebase, and record each stage. A zero-current check, known reference points and repeated measurements help distinguish fixed offset from random variation.

Recording and reproduction

Record ambient temperature, warm-up time, range, filter settings and calibration status. A calibration result has comparative value when another engineer can reproduce the measurement from the record.

Calibration is not a single number; it is a set of conditions and a traceable process.
