TBS1000C Series Digital Oscilloscope

Define the measurement objective

Before selecting an oscilloscope probe, confirm instrument input impedance, input limits, bandwidth and interface format. Probe attenuation, output amplitude and power requirements also affect compatibility. Probes with dedicated interfaces may depend on instrument functions, while general-purpose connectors still require electrical checks.

Check the measurement chain

Effective measurement performance depends on the probe, connection accessories and instrument together. Cables and adapters can affect frequency response, and the display scale must match probe attenuation. Use the specific instrument and probe manuals to confirm compatibility rather than relying only on whether the connector fits.

Mechanical compatibility is only the first condition

A connector that fits establishes mechanical compatibility only. Instrument input impedance, maximum permitted input, probe output and power supply must also match. Dedicated probe interfaces may provide identification, scale settings or power; adapters may not preserve these functions. Start with the instrument manufacturer’s probe compatibility documentation.

Assess the measured-circuit end and the instrument end separately

At the circuit end, consider the load the probe places on the circuit. At the instrument end, consider output-to-input matching. Probe input resistance and capacitance can affect the observed signal, with the effect depending on circuit characteristics and frequency. Probes with the same nominal bandwidth can affect measurements differently because their input characteristics differ.

Keep a complete configuration record for each measurement setup

Record the instrument model, input settings, probe model, attenuation or sensitivity, connection accessories and channel purposes. When comparing multiple channels, consider their responses and delays. This helps explain why a measurement changes after replacing a probe or accessory and identify which part of the chain actually needs improvement.
