PV and Storage DC Side: Three Limits of Current Measurement

DC-side current in PV and storage systems contains a steady DC component, ripple and changing operating conditions. The measurement solution must cover all three and support long-term recording.

DC and ripple

First decide whether the total current or the ripple detail is required. A zero-flux sensor can retain the DC component, while a shunt provides another option. Set range and resolution from the smallest change of interest.

Long-term stability

DC-side recording can run for a long time, so offset drift, temperature change and noise become visible. When comparing products, look beyond initial accuracy to behaviour over the actual temperature and time range.

Installation and isolation

Bus voltage, insulation distance and shielding affect installation. Sensor supply, output cabling and acquisition grounding need to be planned together to avoid unintended loops.

Write down DC content, ripple, recording duration and installation conditions before discussing a model; selection becomes much more specific.
