CWT HF Rogowski CoilPearson Pulse Current Transformer

Define the measurement objective

The uses of conventional Rogowski coils and pulse current transformers must both be understood in terms of their AC response. A Rogowski coil normally works with an integrator as a measurement system, and its flexible structure accommodates different conductor shapes. A current transformer must be selected by aperture, core and specific frequency response. Appearance or range alone does not make the two interchangeable.

Check the measurement chain

First distinguish power-frequency signals, switching waveforms and long pulses, then check low-frequency response, bandwidth and amplitude limits. For Rogowski coils, verify the coil and integrator pairing. For current transformers, check manufacturer-specified current and pulse limits. Continuous DC requires a separate measurement method with DC response.

Determine whether the DC component must be retained

If the aim is to record total battery charge/discharge current, continuous DC is part of the result. Conventional Rogowski coils and AC current transformers are therefore unsuitable as a complete measurement method. If the aim is to observe AC ripple on a large DC background, an AC probe may be considered, but amplitude and frequency limits still need checking.

Evaluate pulse duration and peak current together

A short pulse cannot necessarily be measured accurately with any wideband probe. Its leading edge involves high-frequency response, while changes in the plateau involve low-frequency response and droop. For current transformers, check model limits for peak current, RMS current and current-time product separately. For Rogowski systems, also compare integrator noise and low-frequency response rather than selecting only by maximum bandwidth.

Turn the selection task into a defined set of inputs

Prepare the signal type, peak and continuous current, pulse width or operating frequency, conductor dimensions and input requirements of the existing acquisition equipment. Exclude products with unsuitable operating principles or installation geometry before comparing response and output. This yields candidates suited to a specific task rather than a product ranking without measurement conditions.
